“What is the nature of the priesthood in the New Testament”? In the Old Testament a prophet was a person who spoke to man on behalf of God A priest spoke to God on behalf of man. Jesus changes all that.

We begin the second section In the first section we saw that Jesus supersedes all Prophets- making prophets obsolete. In this second section we will see that Jesus supersedes the Old Testament priesthood.

We begin the second section In the first section we saw that Jesus supersedes all Prophets- making prophets obsolete.

Why should we recognize Jesus as the superior and only mediator before God?

I. He fulfills the OT requirements of a High Priest. (1-4)

Hebrews 5:1-4 “Every high priest is selected from among the people and is appointed to represent the people in matters related to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins. 2 He is able to deal gently with those who are ignorant and are going astray, since he himself is subject to weakness.

Hebrews 5:1-4 “3 This is why he has to offer sacrifices for his own sins, as well as for the sins of the people. 4 And no one takes this honor on himself, but he receives it when called by God, just as Aaron was.”

I. He fulfills the OT requirements of a High Priest. (1-4) A. His origin: "selected from among men."

I. He fulfills the OT requirements of a High Priest. (1-4) A. His origin: "selected from among men." B. The nature of his office: "he is appointed to represent us in matters relating to God."

Consequence of falsely claiming to be a priest --- like the 250 princes of Korah’s family who decided they had the right to be Prophets and Priests just like Moses and Aaron. The earth opened up and swallowed them! (Numbers 16)

Consequence of falsely claiming to be a priest --- or like Aaron’s wicked sons, Nadab and Abihu. They took it on themselves to offer Sacrifices in their own way. When they offered unauthorized fire on the Altar, they ended up being consumed by authorized fire from God. (Leviticus 10)

I. He fulfills the OT requirements of a High Priest. (1-4) A. His origin: "selected from among men." B. The nature of his office: "he is appointed to represent us in matters relating to God." C. The special purpose: "to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins." (verse 1

The duties of his office 1. He has to offer sacrifices for his sins and others. (v. 3,6)

The duties of his office 1. He has to offer sacrifices for his sins and others. (v. 3,6) 2. His call to his office is from God. "No one takes this honor up himself; he must be called by God"

The duties of his office 1. He has to offer sacrifices for his sins and others. (v. 3,6) 2. His call to his office is from God. "No one takes this honor up himself; he must be called by God" 3. His call is exemplified by Aaron call. "just as Aaron was." (4)

Why should we recognize Jesus as the superior and only mediator before God?

II. He exceeds the requirements of the OT law. (5-10)

Hebrews 5: In the same way, Christ did not take on himself the glory of becoming a high priest. But God said to him, “You are my Son; today I have become your Father.” 6 And he says in another place, “You are a priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.”

Hebrews 5: During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission.

Hebrews 5: Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered 9 and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him 10 and was designated by God to be high priest in the order of Melchizedek.

II. He exceeds the requirements of the OT law. (5-10) A. Everything essential to a high priest is found in Jesus.

II. He exceeds the requirements of the OT law. (5-10) A. Everything essential to a high priest is found in Jesus. B. All the weaknesses in the former high priests are absent in Christ.

II. He exceeds the requirements of the OT law. (5-10) A. Everything essential to a high priest is found in Jesus. B. All the weaknesses in the former high priests are absent in Christ. C. Christ has advantages over the old high priest.

Hebrews 4:15 "For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are."

Isaiah 53:7 "He was oppressed. He was afflicted. They made his grave down with the wicked. He was put to grief. He bore the sin of many. He made intercession for the transgressors."

Jesus can sympathize with you. Are you alone? Forsaken by people? You remind him of Gethsemane.

Jesus can sympathize with you. Are you alone? Forsaken by people? You remind him of Gethsemane. Are you tried? Tested? Tempted? You remind him of his forty days in the wilderness.
