Introduction to MARC Cataloguing Part 2 Presenters: Irma Sauvola: Part 1 Dan Smith: Part 2

Original Cataloguing in JASI Who sets the JASI Standards? What are the JASI Standards? What does a JASI Record look like? JASI Record break down. What is seen by the public, iBistro vs. JASI

Steering Committee The JASI Steering committee is a representative of the JASI community. The committee - Name

JASI MARC record standards Important Term definitions Field - A group of items that contains similar information and is related (title field, author field, etc). Tag – A three-digit number assigned to each field (245 for title, 100 for author, etc). Indicator – The first two character positions that supplement the field’s data. Each indicator is independent and has different meanings for various tags. A blank indicator means either “undefined” or “no information provided”. Subfield – Holds information which allows for further division of field data. Leader - The leader consists of the first 24 character positions in the MARC record.

The JASI Catalog Structure The JASI catalogue can be broken down to 3 parts Title Call Number Item

Catalog Record Structure Title or Catalog Fixed Fields Bibliographic data Call Number or Volume Library, Call Number Class Scheme Call Number or Volume Library, Call Number Class Scheme Item Item ID / Barcode Item type Item Item ID / Barcode Item type Page 30 Of Cataloguing Reference guide

Title Record Bibliographic Entries This portion of the record is available to all JASI members. Any changes to this portion of the record transcends to all libraries.

Call Number or Volume The Call number entry will contain the Library’s Call number, Library Name, and Class scheme.

Item On the Item portion you will locate the Item ID, Item Type and an image of the barcode. It is common to have multiple copies of the same title at a single library, therefore a library may have multiple entries at this level. It is important to remember that each item format has a different ISBN and each item entry must have a unique ISBN entered.
