Skill Two:Parked Cars

More than 70% of all traffic accidents involving children happen close to Parked Cars. This happens because children are so small that drivers cannot see them. They also do not know how to deal with Parked Car situations. Crossing Safely at Parked Cars

In general children should be discouraged from crossing by Parked cars. But in most streets this is unrealistic. The children must be taught a strategy that will keep them safe in cases where crossing by Parked Cars cannot be avoided. They must be always accompanied by an adult The Problem

Find a Safe Place Find a Gap on the other side Stop at the kerb Check cars, lights, exhaust, engine and for people If not safe move to better site Move to outside corner on the left of the car. This is called “Line of Sight” Hold hands always and look right then left If not safe wait and move to a safer place. What the Children Should Learn to Do

Whilst out on the road make sure the children give you total input. Let them direct you across the road after they have picked up the general points. The checklists must be completed and given to the coordinator after session or before next session. Training
