Rosacea and acne Aaron, Tyra, and Cariane

Rosacea Chronic skin disease that occurs mainly in the forehead, the chin, and the lower half of the nose. Tiny blood vessels in these areas enlarge and become more prominent. Rosacea occurs most often between the ages of 30 and 60. More common in women, however the symptoms are worse in men. Rosacea is incurable, symptoms come and go Acne Most common skin disorder in the US Occurs when hair follicles become plugged with oil and dead skin cells Usually appears on neck, chest, back and shoulders Most common in teenagers

Causes Rosacea Acne No exact cause However certain factors can aggravate Rosacea: Emotional factors: stress and anxiety Sun exposure Spicy foods Strenuous exercise Hot baths or saunas You are more likely to develop rosacea if you have fair skin. Acne Accumulation of dirt in the pores Hormones Stress

Symptoms(rosacea) Facial redness Red bumps Eye problems Enlarged nose Causes redness in the central portion of the face. Small blood vessels in the cheeks and nose swell and become visible Red bumps Many people that have rosacea develop bumps that are similar to acne. The skin may feel hot and tender. Eye problems Half of affected patients experience eye dryness, irritation, and swollen, reddened eyelids. Enlarged nose Although rare, rosacea causes thickness of the skin on the nose area, causing it to appear bulbous. More common in men than women.

Symptoms (acne) Whiteheads (closed plugged pores) Blackheads (open plugged pores — the oil turns brown when it is exposed to air) Small red, tender bumps (papules) Pimples (pustules), which are papules with pus at their tips Large, solid, painful lumps beneath the surface of the skin (nodules) Painful, pus-filled lumps beneath the surface of the skin (cystic lesions)

Prevention Treat your skin gently Avoid factors that trigger rosacea (alcohol, spicy foods, being out in hot weather) Soothing the skin with chamomile Avoid abrasives Select cosmetics for sensitive skin

treatment Since there is overlap between acne and rosacea, medication may be similar Different medication depending on severity Antibacterial washes Topical creams Lasers Antibiotic pills Avoiding factors that trigger rosacea
