FrogFit A Mobile Assistant for Crossfit Workouts Geoffrey Adams, Bryan Kribbs, and Matthew Ratliff Advisor: Dr. Donnell Payne Chalkbucket Labs Advisor: Steve Johnston Background Living a healthy lifestyle has become a major focus in today’s society due to the rising number of Americans with conditions linked to overeating, obesity, and inactivity. One way to combat these conditions is to participate in fitness programs, such as Crossfit. Promoted as both a physical exercise and as a competitive fitness sport, Crossfit incorporates benchmark workouts covering all aspects of fitness. For the growing number of people participating in Crossfit, there currently exist systems that can show participants where they excel. However, there is no system specifically designed for Crossfit that can identify areas of weakness or provide a single, comprehensive fitness score which allows athletes to measure themselves against other athletes. Our View of Crossfit Crossfit is a unique workout regiment aimed at developing elite athletes that excel in all domains of fitness. Each WOD consists of any number of movements. For example, one WOD may consist of a 200m run, 50 pushups, and a 1 mile swim. Typically one WOD is performed per day within a single gym. Over time the goal is to train well enough to maximize performance across all the categories. Our client has defined 8 unique categories of fitness: Body Weight Endurance Heavy Weight Light Weight Long Olympic Lifts Power Lifts Our client has assigned each WOD to only one of the 8 categories; the category it emphasizes the most. For example, the WOD Fran is a Light Weight WOD meaning each movement within that workout is designed to strengthen athlete’s Light Weight attributes System Design FitScore Calculations FrogFit includes an original scoring algorithm developed to calculate fitness levels in each of the eight categories based on the median and standard deviation in their respective gym. It combines the eight individual scores to give a comprehensive FitScore. A confidence score is also provided alongside the FitScore to show the athlete how accurate the given FitScore is relative to their true athletic performance. This confidence score is based on the number of workouts completed in the recent history for the athlete. Acknowledgments The FrogFit team would like to express our appreciation to Steve Johnston, the co-founder of Chalkbucket labs, who brought us this project and provided a development environment. We would also like to thank Dr. Donnell Payne for motivating us and being there for us every step of the way. References Department of Computer Science Goals Provide an original scoring system designed to give overall and categorical fitness scores to identify areas of weakness. Allow coaches to maintain athlete profiles, maintain statistics on benchmark workouts, designate Workouts Of the Day (WODs), maintain athletes’ workout data, view overall workout scores and by category, and view gym histories and leaderboards Allow athletes to edit individual profiles, maintain individual workout data, obtain fitness scores and confidence intervals by fitness category, compare individual fitness to gym averages, and view gym leaderboards Provide easy access for athletes and coaches by developing a mobile application for athletes and a web portal for coaches Athlete’s Mobile App Coach’s Web Portal Variable Names: CCS - Categorical Confidence Score CFS - Categorical FitScore CS - Confidence Score FS - FitScore PCFS - Previous Categorical FitScore WS - Workout Score Results and Conclusions Both the mobile app and web portal are currently being extensively tested. The FitScore algorithm is also being tested to verify that it can handle all ranges of scores and continue to provide accurate calculations. The FrogFit system provides an easy-to-understand, user friendly visualization of workout data. The FrogFit system can be used by athletes to gain instant feedback on their workout performance. After testing it will be delivered to Steve and his team at Chalkbucket Labs in order to be incorporated into their current product line.
