From the tire, engine, and the fuel; the car has transformed from a slow, inefficient hunk of wood, into a lean, mean, street machine.
The first tire’s were made out of wood and leather. It soon evolved into solid rubber wrapped around wood. The problem with the solid rubber tire was that they would get soft and mushy in hot weather and get hard and inflexible in the cold. Image.search.yahoo.com
In 1839 Charles Good year discovered the vulcanization process. This process heated the rubber of the tire with sulfur; which turned the rubber into a firm pliable material. Image.search.yahoo.com
This method absorbed shock and resisted abrasion. After the vulcanization process was the pneumatic method enclosed air in a tube and surrounded the tube with rubber. Image.search.yahoo.com
This method was found to cut down on vibrations and provide more traction. This invention was made by a Scottish inventor, Robert W. Thomas. But sadly Robert W. Thomas was far ahead of his time. Image.search.yahoo.com
The second inventor of the pneumatic method was John B. Dunlop. Dunlop claimed to have no knowledge of Roberts earlier invention. Image.search.yahoo.com
In Europe 1948 the first steel radial tires appeared The tire has a thin steel fabric going around incasing it and making it strong Image.search.yahoo.com
Some of the advantages to radial tires are: they have a longer tread life because the steel keeps it from rolling as much, which also increases gas mileage
There are some new ideas and inventions that may reinvent the wheel. One example is the tweel. The tweel is a mixture of both the wheel and the tire. It is flexible and durable.
The best source I had for the tire was from the cite below. "History if the Tire" History of the Tire March < online.com/generator/www/us/en/continental/ transport/themes/about_continental/tire_hist ory/tire_history_en.html>.
The first car to move under its own power was moved by steam. This car was built by Nicolas Joseph Cugnot. The vehicle was used for the French military to carry around heavy artillery. image.search.yahoo.com
And the car the engine was used on only moved 2.5 mph The steam engine heated water which expanded and the turn the turbine. The steam engine had to pressurize every ten to fifteen minutes.
The first crude oil electric carriage was made by Scottish inventor Robert Anderson. The first successful electric car in the United States was built by William Morrison in The electric car was killed when Henry Ford started mass producing the gas powered automobile.
The electric car downfall had to do with not being able to go long distances and the lack of horsepower.
In 1862 Alphonse Bear de Rochas figured out how to compress gas as the same cylinder which the gas was being burnt.
For some odd reason many people think that Henry Ford invented the automobile. Henry ford didn’t invent the car or the assembly line. However he did improve the assembly which made the automobile more affordable for everyone
With Henry’s improvement of the assembly line he moved the build speed from twelve hours and eight minutes to one hour and thirty-three minutes; he built more than 15 million automobiles over an 18 year period.
The automobile has changed drastically since the first design of the automobile. Form the tires, engine, and the process in which the automobile was made; the automobile has changed for the better.
