Introduction In this presentation I will be giving you background information about the photography industry for example: The history of photography. Different jobs in the photography industry. Skills required in photography. Salaries. Working conditions. Where jobs are available (nationally and globally) How would you apply for the job How would you prepare for the job interview Typical working day Bibliography

Photography Photography is an art. It was invented in the first decades of the 19th century, photography seemed to be able to capture more detail and information that traditional mediums. Sir John F.W Herschel created the word photography, it is derived from the Greek words photos ‘light’ and graphein ‘to draw’. Some photographers work independently and some photographer to have 50 members on their photography team.

Job Title/Job Description Sport /Journalistic photography: In most cases, professional sports photography is a branch of photojournalism, while amateur sports photography such as photos of children playing football, is a branch of vernacular photography. The main application of professional sports photography is for editorial purposes; dedicated sports photographers usually work for newspapers, major wire agencies or dedicated sports magazines. However, sports photography is also used for advertising purposes both to build a brand and as well as to promote a sport in a way that cannot be accomplished by editorial means.

Salary and conditions For a photographer the typical range of a starting salary is between £10,500 and £21,250. Starting out many entrants to the profession start as assistants, resulting in some extremely low starting salaries – sometimes less than £10,000. Salaries at the top end of the profession typically range from £25,000 to £65,000 but can be much higher for those who become famous or highly sought-after. Those who choose to build up a self-employed practice, as is normal in fine art for example, have even more variable earning, income is more often supplemented by other related activities, such as teaching.

Requirements There is no one set educational requirement to become a sports photographer. It’s important that an individual in this role have a strong background and be able to demonstrate experience within photography directly. They must understand what it takes to get a good shot, particularly in an often chaotic environment. A sports photographer may receive training on the job in terms of how to get the best shots in specific environments, or on the sport itself. They may receive training on new tools or equipment, or they may attend conferences or seminars in their field. To get started, it may be helpful to have a degree within photography or at least some classes, but most organization or teams will want to see a portfolio of work more than anything else.

Where are jobs available Photography is a very popular job and there are available jobs all over the UK. In 2008 photographers held around 152,000 jobs. There are photography jobs available all over the world, photography has one of the biggest ranging jobs across the world because of the different genres such as landscape, sport and nature giving jobs across the world in every genre.

Hours of work Most photographers will work 35-40 hours a week, others will work longer hours at different times during the day or night. For landscape photographers most of their time is spent researching, Working hours vary with commissioned work because you will be set a project for a a certain amount of photographs and a certain deadline, some can work over 60 hours a week for 2-3 week, then go to not working for a while

Working environment For a sports photographer most time is spent where the sports/action is. As a sports photographer your alone, for example in a stadium there are hundreds of other photographers trying to capture the same images as you. You work on your own but you are never alone, depending on what you have been asked by your employer the environments can be very different from children's football to the world cup and the Olympics

Typical working day A typical life of a sports photographer includes a lot of traveling to the venue where you will be covering the action. You have to arrive early at the venue and decide where to position yourself. After the game you process your images to see if any will make the back of the newspapers.

How would you apply for the job The first thing you want to do before you apply for a visual job such as photography is to produce a portfolio. Every photography agency/employer requires to see a portfolio of your work at the interview. A portfolio is used to plan, organize and document education, work samples and skills. Career portfolios serve as proof of one's skills, abilities and potential in the future. Theh best way to apply for a job is to apply online, you are more likely to get an interview by applying online than going in the retail shop.
