You need to know… Where the main cities, seas, volcanoes and mountains are located How describe the climate using a climate graph What the EU is and how it links to Italy The reasons why Venice is at increasing risk from flooding and how they are dealing with it Why there are so many volcanoes in Italy and why people live near volcanoes What globalisation is and how Italy’s fashion industry shows globalisation The reasons for Milan’s pollution problems The range of opinions associated with building a new ski resort in the Alps

The Geography of Italy Make sure you can locate these places on a blank map.

Describing climates To show what the climate is like in an area we use climate graphs. You need to be able to use a climate graph to describe the climate in Italy. Guide to using climate graphs

Italy and the EU The European Union (EU) is a group of countries trying to work together for peace and prosperity. The aims are: - help people earn enough money and get treated fairly - by working as a group the EU hopes that Europe will be listened to more by other countries - help Europeans to live in peace, without the threat of war. - make laws that protect people’s rights in the member countries. It helps Italy by: Helping unemployment in EU countries with training opportunities funded by the European union. Encourages trade between EU countries so that members from the EU countries benefit by selling their products. Promotes the development and economic prospect of the member countries. Members of the EU provide economic security for all members by paying taxes to the EU. The EU can provide physical and monetary aid when natural disasters strike. The EU provides food and energy security to member states making it easier for EU countries who are unable to produce enough food or energy.

Flooding in Venice Venice is at increasing risk of flooding because of: Land sinking due to the weight of the buildings Rising sea levels – global warming More storm events ‘acqua alta’ – also due to global warming

Flooding in Venice Make sure you can explain how this will help reduce the impacts of flooding. Saving Venice

Volcanoes in Italy Make sure you can explain how volcanoes are created on destructive plate boundaries (look back at the work you did in September). Also, make sure you know the list of reasons why people live near volcanoes.reasons

Globalisation Globalisation is the increasing amount of global connections we have in the world. Countries and people have more links than ever before with other places and people around the world. Countries are becoming more integrated and more interdependent.

Pollution in Milan Milan is one of the worst polluted cities in Europe. Make sure you can explain the reasons for this and suggest how they could reduce the problem.

Adding to the Alps Whenever any new development is built a variety of people will have an opinion on the development. Make sure you can explain why some people might be in favour of building a new tourist development in the Alps and why some people would be against this proposal.
