Presentation transcript:

Print Advertising Marketing your product to customers using a printed source such as newspapers or magazines. What makes the sample advertisement eye catching?

5 Design Techniques To Get Your Message Noticed Z Pattern Focal Point Balance White Space Use of Color As we learn each topic, write notes to help you remember the definition. copy the highlighted words. Pay close attention to the text boxes for each picture.

Your task… You will be creating an advertisement that will be added to your final presentation board. The goal is to use at least one of the following techniques to help customers choose you!

Z Pattern Placing writing and pictures along an imaginary “Z” Draws the readers eye to most important information. Eye is drawn to catchy headline. Interesting pig photo draws eye down and across the ad. Eye naturally follows text left to right: focus is on contact information for the company.

Focal Point Eye-catching picture or creative text Usually near the center of the advertisement Makes you stop and want to read the “fine print” Picture makes you relax…then you can think about what you need next…coffee!

Balance Keeping amount of text and pictures about equal on both sides of an ad. One side of advertisement shouldn’t look heavy or empty. Balance relaxes the eye. Pictures take up majority of the space. Words take up about the same amount of space. Are the top and bottom also balanced?

White Space Leaving open space with no text or pictures. Only background color shows; usually white Guides reader to what is important What do your eyes focus on because of the white space? Purposely left white to draw attention here

Using Color Blue/Purple –Calm Red –Action Orange –Energy Black/Grey –Power Green –Refresh, relax Yellow –Cheerful Why was blue a good choice for this company and what they sell?

Your Turn Now create an advertisement for your company for either a newspaper or magazine. Make sure to include the design techniques we learned today: Z pattern, focal point, balance, white space, and use of color. o Check these off in your blue packet as you go: o Headline (sentence to get the reader’s attention) o Company Slogan o Company Logo o Contact Information o A graphic or picture o Other words, text, or pictures to sell your product/service
