For ATHLETES: In the Handbook Team Rules

 Compete with integrity, perseverance and a sense of fair play.  Promote a friendly and welcoming atmosphere for opposing schools.  Treat teammates, opponents, coaches, officials and spectators with respect.  Exercise self-control in accepting officials’ decisions.  Shake hands with opponents before and after each contest.  Serve as positive role models to other students.

Participation in our programs is a privilege, not a right. Student behavior off of school grounds is a concern. …substance abuse jeopardizes the health and safety of the individual… Parents, students, coaches all share the duty to report substance abuse incidents.

 Practice start times After school (3:15) or NOT after school  Concussion Vital Signs  Bull Run / Conference 35 / Region B  Field Hockey  JV Buses (Volleyball)  Champions of Character Program

Champions of Character  Goal – intentionally DO what we say we will do  View online at:

Intentionally Teach Character  Teach character like you’d teach any skill:  Define—Set specific, age appropriate, clear and concise expectations.  Model—Show what your value looks like in an action setting. Demonstrate.  Shape—Rehearse potential problem situations. Praise good examples. Confront poor ones.  Reinforce—Positive verbal reinforcement for anything that comes closer to the desired behavior. Use names and the specific action you’re reinforcing.

 The George Mason High School Athletic Program fosters excellence, teaches values, and enriches lives through competitive athletics that challenge student- athletes to reach their full potential.

 INTEGRITY  RESPECT  RESPONSIBILITY  SPORTSMANSHIP  SERVANT LEADERSHIP

Effectively Dealing with it...

Be sure the athlete is “involved”… Learning Maturation

Contact the Coach… FIRST

Contact the Coach… Not before a game/practice Not after a game/practice

THE PLAYING TIME QUESTION...

 JUNIOR VARSITY/FRESHMAN Development, over time Varsity Preparation…IN TIME! No minimum required...

 JUNIOR VARSITY/FRESHMAN Development, over time Varsity Preparation…IN TIME! No minimum required...  VARSITY Never guaranteed  Coaches will strive to be fair….it is not fair to treat unequals as equals

 RIDE THE BUS!!!!  FCCPS provides buses/vans for all athletic contests and athletes must ride to, and from, all contests on school provided transportation unless prior approval is granted. No exceptions!

 All student-athletes must be in school within ONE HOUR of school start time, and stay all day. You must give us 24 hr advance notice if you wish to participate and cannot meet that requirement  Buses that arrive back to GM after midnight…allow/not require up to ONE HOUR late arrival to school the next day.

Academic/Extra-curricular Responsibilities. Students are expected to meet their academic requirements (including Band/Theatre/Clubs) without impacting the sports they have chosen to participate in. Academics are a top priority for our athletes but so are team sports values and responsibilities. Athletes are expected to discuss with coaches in advance if the student feels academic needs may conflict with practice/contests.
