Katina Paitaris ARE4453 Contemporary Artists

Cai Juo-Qaing  born in 1957 in Quanzhou City, Fujian Province, China, and lives and works in New York.  studied stage design at the Shanghai Drama Institute and attended the Institute for Contemporary Art  Since September 11th he has reflected upon his use of explosives both as metaphor and material. “Why is it important,” he asks, “to make these violent explosions beautiful? Because the artist, like an alchemist, has the ability to transform certain energies, using poison against poison, using dirt and getting gold.”

Do Ho Suh  born in Seoul, Korea in 1962  earned his BFA and MFA in Oriental Painting from Seoul National University. Moved to US to continue his studies at the Rhode Island School of Design and Yale University  Known for sculptures and installations that defy conventional notions of scale and site-specificity, Do-Ho Suh’s work draws attention to the ways viewers occupy and inhabit public space. Exploring the fine line between strength in numbers and homogeneity, Suh’s works question the identity of the individual in today’s increasingly transnational, global society.

Barbara Kruger  born in Newark, New Jersey, in 1945  attended Syracuse University, the School of Visual Arts, and studied art and design with Diane Arbus at Parson’s School of Design in New York,  Barbara Kruger’s background in design is evident in work which layers found photographs from existing sources with pithy and aggressive text that implicate the viewer in struggles for power and control. With a trademark palette of red, black and white, Kruger’s work questions feminism, class, consumerism, and individual autonomy and desire.
