“I lift my eyes to the hills. Where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, The Maker of heaven and earth.” Psalm 121

Naomi’s Pilgrimage to Bethlehem I lift up my eyes to the hills. Where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, The Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip. He who watches over you will not slumber. Indeed, he who watches over Israel Will neither slumber nor sleep.

The LORD watches over you. The LORD is your shade at your right hand. The sun will not harm you by day, Nor the moon by night. The LORD will keep you from all harm. He will watch over your life. The LORD will watch over your coming and going Both now and forevermore.” Psalm 121

Naomi’s Pilgrimage The Book of Ruth The Setting: From the Plains of Moab to the Hills of Bethlehem during the time of the Judges Ruth 1:1-18 The Characters: Naomi, Orpah, Ruth - Ruth 1:8-22 Boaz - Ruth 2:1-4

Heartbreak: Naomi’s Story - Ruth 1: 8-22 Naomi said, “Don’t call me Naomi. Call me Mara, because the Almighty has made my life very bitter. I went away full, but the LORD has brought me back empty. Why call me Naomi? The LORD has afflicted me; the Almighty has brought misfortune upon me.” Ruth 1:20-21

Heartbreak: Tell of a time in your life when there was great heartbreak or despair. How did your help come from the LORD?

Hardship: Ruth 2:1-23 Naomi asked Ruth, “Where did you glean today? Where did you work? Blessed be the man who took notice of you!” Ruth 2:19 Naomi advised, “It will be good for you, my daughter, to go with (Boaz’s) girls, because in someone else’s field you might be harmed.” Ruth 2:22

Humiliation: Naomi said, “My daughter, should I not try to find a home for you, where you will be well provided for? Is not Boaz a kinsman of ours? Tonight he will be winnowing barley on the threshing floor. Wash and perfume yourself, and put on your best clothes. Then go down to the threshing floor, but don’t let him know you are there… When he lies down, note the place where his is lying. Then go and uncover his feet and lie down. He will tell you what to do.” Ruth 3:1-4

Help: Ruth’s Story Ruth said, “Don’t urge me to leave you or to turn back from you. Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried. May the Lord deal with me, be it ever so severely, if even death separates you and me.” Ruth 1:16-17 Ruth said, “I will do whatever you say.” Ruth 3:5

Help 1.What women in your life served as Christian mentors for you? Tell your story. 2.What are the most important lessons that you could share as a mentor? 3.What are some questions or needs that you might have for a mentor?

Naomi asked, “How did it go, my daughter?” Ruth 3:16 Naomi advised, “Wait, my daughter, until you find out what happens. For the man will not rest until the matter is settled today.” Ruth 3:18 Help

Hope: Ruth 4:13-17 The women of Bethlehem said, “Praise be to the Lord, who this day has not left you without a kinsman-redeemer. May he become famous throughout Israel! He will renew your life and sustain you in your old age. For your daughter-in-law, who loves you and who is better to you than seven sons, has given him birth… Naomi has a son.” Ruth 4:13-14, 17

I Lift My Eyes to the Hills I lift up my eyes to the hills. Where does my help come from? My help comes from the LORD, The Maker of heaven and earth. He will not let your foot slip. He who watches over you will not slumber. Indeed, he who watches over Israel Will neither slumber nor sleep.
