SPAIN Spanish Culture

Flamenco Flamenco is a traditional Spanish dance created by the Gypsies. This art form includes the following three parts: Cante- the song Baile- the dance Guitarra- the guitar playing

Flamenco This way of dancing originated in Southern Spain in the providence of Andalusia. Flamenco was performed in singing cafes all over the country.

Flamenco It began to flourish in the 1700’s and continued to gain popularity threw the 18 th and 19 th centuries, especially around Flamenco consists of all sorts of songs and dances.

Flamenco One of the most popular dances is called the “Petenera”. It tells a story of a young girl who brings tragedy to herself and village. Some songs are named after towns. Granadina (Grenada) Sevillanas (Seville) Rodenas (Ronda)

Bullfighting Bullfighting originated in Andalusia during the 15 th century and is performed today. This was first done as a sacrifice, but now the fight is dedicated to the president.

Bullfighting A bull in put into an arena with the bullfighter, or Matador, and they battle until the bull is dead. Many Matador’s have died during the performance.

Bullfighting The Matador wears a satin outfit called a traje de luces, or suit of lights. The traje de luces has remained the same since the 18 th century.

Bull-Running Every year in north- eastern Spain the city of Pamplona holds the Festival of San Fermin. This is where the Running of the Bulls takes place. The Runing of the Bulls takes place every year during the first two weeks of July.

Bull-Running The first Running of the Bulls took place in 1591, it was a way to move bulls to the arena for bullfighting. Young men began running in front of the animals in the 1600s for sport.
