How did graffiti begin? - Graffiti was first used in Ancient Greece as a means of advertising. - People in ancient Rome also used graffiti to give out religious messages. - Back then graffiti was done by scratching the image or words into stone walls using knives and sharp tools, very different from the hi-tech spray cans used by modern day graffiti artists. - In the ancient times, and also in many places today, graffiti is considered vandalism because it has often been done without the owner’s permission. -If you were caught doing graffiti in ancient Greece you would either be put in jail or receive a public whipping!
