Solving Multiplication and Division Equations

Lesson Objective Students will be able to solve multiplication and division equations.

Lesson Beginning Draw algebra tiles to model 3x = -9. Then solve for x.

1) GOAL : Get the variable on one side of the equation. 2) You always perform the same operation to both sides of an equation. 3) To undo an operation you perform its opposite operation to both sides of the equation.

The inverse operation of multiplication is DIVISION. The inverse operation of division is MULTIPLICATION.

9x = 45 This reads 9 times x So use the opposite. Divide both sides by x= 5 - 4m = m = 7

This is a division Problem, use Multiplication to solve it. - k (8) = 48 Now Divide By k =- 48

Solve for x.
