INDEXES Current Events and Issues 1 Shellie Hill—LBSC 5613

2 Articles from newspapers and magazines have more current, up-to-date information than books. This information is written more concisely, which is usually what we want unless we’re doing an extensive search.

3 What databases do for the library patron is search through hundreds of articles looking for a specific article or group of articles that he wants.

4 Indexes have been around since the nineteenth century. Poole’s Index to Periodical Literature 479 American and English periodicals Search by subject only

5 In the 1960’s and 70’s libraries began to search indexes by computer. In the 1980’s CD-ROMs provided more economical ways to store large amounts of data in small spaces. Next, libraries began to lease database indexes and often load the information onto their library servers for their patrons to access.

6 Today libraries are able to lease database indexes and allow their patrons to view full text articles over the World Wide Web.

General Periodical Indexes 7 EBSCO—coverage dates from ,300 titles indexed most in full text search by keyword in the article title, subject, author, and abstract field ProQuest—coverage dates from 1989 full-text newspapers its specialty 3,750 titles indexed most in full text search by Boolean operators, advanced search, complete subject indexing

8 Thomson Gale’s InfoTrac OneFile—coverage from ,200 titles indexed (New York Times and USA Today) over half full text ability to limit searches by date, full text, and journal title H.W. Wilson Company—longest record for indexing—1890 many indexes by many names many of the old print back files are now available electronically, but not all full text

9 LexisNexis—full text information current events, legal issues, reports, official documents, briefing papers, conference proceedings and organizational newsletters search by keyword and subject headings First Search—includes over 70 subject databases access to WorldCat
