YOUR ENDOCRINE SYSTEM

ENDOCRINE SYSTEM Nervous system has been described as your body’s control center. –Your endocrine system works closely with your nervous system to regulate body functions.

ENDOCRINE SYSTEM Consists of several glands located throughout your body. –Gland – A group of cells, or an organ, that secretes a chemical substance. Hormones – Greek for ‘to set in motion’ Endocrine glands secrete hormones directly into bloodstream. Each hormone released regulates one of your body’s activities.

GLANDS OF THE ENDOCRINE SYSTEM The endocrine glands work on signals from the brain or from other glands. Pituitary gland – Called the ‘Master Gland’, because it regulates other endocrine glands. –Located at the base of the brain. –Hormones secreted: Regulate thyroid, adrenal, and kidneys. Regulate your growth and development.

GLANDS OF THE ENDOCRINE SYSTEM Thyroid gland – The largest gland in the endocrine system. –Located where the larynx and trachea meet. –Regulates the chemical reactions of nutrients.

GLANDS OF THE ENDOCRINE SYSTEM Parathyroid glands – Regulate the distribution of minerals. Adrenal glands – Secrete hormones that help the body maintain its levels of sodium and water, help digestive process, and control body’s response to emergencies (fight or flight response). –Located on your kidneys

GLANDS OF THE ENDOCRINE SYSTEM Pancreas – Is part of 2 body systems (digestive & endocrine). –Supplies the small intestine with digestive juice. –Located behind the stomach. –Contains small clusters of cells called ‘islets of langerhans’ Which control blood sugar levels.

GLANDS OF THE ENDOCRINE SYSTEM Ovaries – Female reproductive glands. –Development of secondary sex characteristics during adolescence. Testes – Male reproductive glands. –Development of secondary sex characteristics during adolescence.

REVIEW OF HORMONE’S Pituitary gland –Controls physical growth, other glands, movements of smooth muscles. Parathyroid –Regulates calcium and phosphorous levels. Islets of Langerhans –Regulates your blood sugar level.

REVIEW OF HORMONE’S Thyroid gland –Controls the rate that food is converted to energy. Adrenal gland –Control the bodies water balance and use of carbs, proteins, and fats, start the stress response.

STRESS RESPONSE Whenever you are excited or anxious, your body is under stress. Adrenal glands release the adrenaline hormone.

STRESS RESPONSE Stress can be harmful if it goes on too long or happens too often. Can avoid harm by learning to manage stress.
