 Study of Carbon  All compounds with bonds between Carbon atoms  Example of an organic compound: Carbohydrate (C6H12O 6 )  Example of an inorganic compound: Water (H2O)  NO CARBON PRESENT!  Elements that make up living things are: H, P, C, N, O, & S Organic Chemistry

 Is a VERY important element because it can,  Bond to may different elements  Bond to itself (make long chains)  Make single, double, and triple bonds Carbon

 Monomers: small units that make up much larger “macromolecules”  Polymers: monomers joined together  Polymerization: process of joining monomers into a polymer  Dehydration (condensation) reactions occur   Video Video Monomers and Polymers

 Carbohydrates: Simple Sugar -> Starch  Lipids: Glycerol and fatty acids -> Fat or Lipid  Nucleic Acids: Nucleotide -> Nucleic Acid  Proteins: Amino Acid -> Polypeptide (protein) Examples!

 Primary Energy Source (Fuel for life!)  Composed of simple sugars and their polymers  Some Carbs are primarily for storage of energy  Animals – Glycogen  Stored mainly in liver and muscle cells  Plants – Starch  Can also be used for structure Carbohydrates
