First Principles  World Health Organisation (WHO) believes that good health outcomes depend critically on the availability and use of good health information. (The Health Metrics Network)

Health Information  Enablers of information exchange driven by policy and realised through technology, standards, guidelines and protocols

Where have we come from?  Association of Medical Records commenced in Victoria and NSW  Formation of Australian Federation of Medical Record Librarians (AFMRL)  Medical Record Association of Australia incorporated  Health Information Management Association of Australia

The Profession Today  Traditional roles in health sector as managers, coders, and advisors  Expanding roles including consultancy, information and data analysis, change management, IT and technical speciality leadership, terminology and audit, quality safety and policy management.  ……there’s no limit to where this can lead

The Association’s Role  Membership Services Empower its members to take a leading role in information management in health Provide advocacy and policy input on information management in health Provide a forum for networking, fellowship and mutual support between members  Education Services Deliver Core professional modules – terminologies & classification both nationally & internationally  Consulting Services Undertake Health information systems development, reviews & capacity building nationally & internationally

Current Environment  National initiatives supporting ehealth developments – shared electronic health records  Assisting the realisation of managing a patient’s information spread across multiple databases and systems as a whole (conceptual) record

Current Environment  Data quality and integrity not just within an application but across the enterprise is a primary goal to support better decision making  Data that is shared electronically between health care organisation must be quality data  Health information managers can help shape: Corporate governance Policies and Use of technology
