The Spanish American War

WHEN? Did the war start? End? When does class end? When does the weekend begin?

A really short war, no matter what dates you use… START DATE April 23 rd, 1898…when Spain declares war April 25 th …when Congress declares war April 20 th …the date Congress says they meant to declare war April 21 st …the date Congress changed it to later. Why? Who knows? May 1 st …the first battle at Manila Bay. END DATE August 12 th …last battle December 10 th …Paris Peace Treaty signed February 6 th, 1899… Congress ratifies (accepts) the peace treaty April 11 th …treaty comes into law

WHY… Does the U.S. want war with Spain? Won’t Spain let Cuba be free? Do Cubans want to be independent?

I want YOU…to go to war. 1.Because policies like reconcentration are barbaric. (see photo) 2.Because we have a lot of investments like sugar plantations in Cuba. 3.Because Spain sank the Maine! ( hey, that rhymes!) 4.Because the newspaper told me to be mad. I am YELLOW with rage.

HOW? Does the war begin?

The “Maine” Event The “Maine” Event (now that’s punny)! Yellow Journalism!

WHAT… Are the major events during and after the war?

Crash CourseCrash Course (8:22)

HOW? Does the war end?

Treaty of Paris—12/10/1898 In regards to Cuba… Spain…OUT! U.S. … OUT (eventually) Teller Amendment: – We promise we won’t stay in Cuba. Seriously, we are leaving. Like, right now. Platt Amendment – Well, we might be back. If you need liberty or freedom or yada yada yada…stop asking so many questions! What else do we win? Puerto Rico! Guam! The Philippines! (OK, we had to buy them).

Analyze.

After the Treaty Irony Saying you hate how Europe imperializes places around the world… And then imperializing places around the world.
