What can parents do to increase their children’s motivation towards reading? Encouraging children to make reading part of their everyday lives can be one of the hardest duties parents may have. However, it can become so easy to carry out if you take into account the following tips… Start by sharing a short reading or text with your child during your spare time. Comment on the reading, talk about what you both think, if you liked it or not. Let your kids pick out the next articles/readings. If you want them to start reading a book, let them choose the books they want to read (take them to a bookstore or library). Pick out one book at a time. Do not push them. Do not give them difficult reading. Set goals and reward reading Show interest in what they read. Ask them questions on what they have read so far. Create reading ties. Both you and your child can read the same book at the same time and take some spare time to discuss it. Reading Tips MENU Some people think of reading as a hobby. However, reading has become one of the most important skills to succeed in both education and work. The following tips will help you improve your reading skills and find better ways to overcome difficult or boring texts. Preview your text. Reading the title, introduction and reading subtitles can help you have an idea of what the text is going to be about. Do not understimate a reading’s value. Even though the text you are about to read might not be of your interest, do not start reading with a negative attitude. You may find very interesting information. Find a comfortable place where to read. Noisy places are not good environments for reading; make sure the place has everything you need: peace and comfort. Don’t try to understand or remember everything you read. The most important goal of reading is to be able to understand the general idea of a text. Do not forget why you are reading. Reading for pleasure is not the same as reading for your job or school. However, whatever the reason there is always a motif that can help you keep yourself interested. How to improve your reading skills MENU Efficient Reading depends on the strategies you use when reading. Here are some reading strategies and ways you can improve your reading skills: Use the text effectively. Do not read more than what you have to and concentrate on the information you really need. Be flexible. A good reader must be able to vary his/her reading speed depending on the material and time given. Ensure you have an adequate understanding of the text. Reading everrything does not mean you understood everything. Make sure you understand what you read and, most importantly, that what you read is what you need. Use scanning and skimming strategies. Try to build up on your schema. Using what you know on the topic can help you better understand what you are reading. Seek for help when it is necessary. Sometimes we can ask our parents, teachers and classmates for help. Do not feel ashamed of talking to others and obtain your answers. Efficient Reading depends on the strategies you use when reading.
