Laura Numeroff

Author Laura Numeroff  Laura was born in 1953, in Brooklyn, New York. I was surrounded by art, music, and books.  My father, William, worked on the art staff of the World Telegram & Sun, one of New York's major newspapers. My mother, Florence, was a junior high school home economics teacher.  They both enriched my life with the love of reading, playing the piano, singing, dancing, science and stamp collecting.  I was the youngest of three girls.  I loved being a Girl Scout. I was a Brownie all the way through Cadets. I enjoyed it so much, especially selling Girl Scout cookies. The Thin Mints were and still are my favorites. My best friend, Pat, and I would work on badges together.  I also loved to draw, read and make up stories. I started writing my own stories and drew pictures to go with them. The public library was about 5 blocks from my house and I went every week. At that time you were only allowed six books at a time.  I also loved, STUART LITTLE, And of course, I adored THE CAT IN THE HAT, by Dr. Seuss.

A Day As Laura Numeroff 6:30- Alarm clock, otherwise known as "Lily," meows. I get up, feed her and give my dog Sydney a few pieces of kibble. Petunia my other cat is still sleeping. 6:40- I get back into bed and snuggle with Sydney. Then he moves to a different spot and wakes me up. 7:30- Walk to my office. It's about 10 feet from my bedroom! Go over list of things to do and I write in my pajamas. Don’t tell anyone! 9:00- Go to my favorite coffee place and get breakfast. 10 – 4- Work on whatever project I'm involved in. The time I write varies from day to day. Some days I don't write at all! (Are you surprised to hear that?) Other days, I work long, long hours, sometimes past midnight! Lunch is around 1 or so, depending on how the work is going! Sometimes, I just eat at my desk. 5:30- Sydney and I take a walk in the neighborhood. I bet you're thinking "That's the first time he goes out?" Actually earlier in the day, my friend Katie and her 2 dogs, Barnaby and Sadie and a few other dogs, take Sydney either to the beach, the park or on a hike. This way he gets to spend time with his friends, get some exercise and be outdoors! He usually comes home around 3 and I always ask him how his day was!!! 8:00- Sometimes, I like to write at night. Yes, I watch TV! 10:00- I like to get into bed and read. Sometimes, Lily, Petunia and Sydney join me!
