 An animal cruelty investigator is: › Part of a special task force that works to detect animal abuse and make sure the perpetrators pay for their crimes › They follow up on reports of animal abuse, remove animals from dangerous situations and collect evidence for potential prosecution of the owners in court

 Valid drivers license  Good driving record  College level courses in psychology and sociology  Knowledge of the abuse laws in your state  Familiarity with law enforcement procedures

 Be able to communicate orally and in writing  Be able to work as part of a team  Be good with animals  Need to know how to deal with scared and/or traumatized animals

 Take college courses in: psychology and sociology (since you will be working with people and also trying to understand motives behind the abuse of the animals)  Study natural sciences and criminal justice

This is a fantastic career however you will be exposed to harsh realities associated with animal cruelty. It takes emotional strength to accept that not every animal makes it. But it is a great reward to know that if the animal passed they passed in a safer environment and if they live then you know that they are being loved by a good owner.

 Some colleges now offer special courses on animal cruelty investigation  University of Missouri Extension(has a special class just for this)

 ANIMAL SERVICES OFFICER City of Mission Viejo, California  Animal Control Officer Galveston County Health District La Marque, Texas  ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICER II Seattle, Washington

 Salaries vary depending on experience, responsibilities, and cost of living in your area  Average salary is $31,000 per year  Higher salaries are common for those who investigate animal cruelty as a law enforcement officer

 Job openings for animal care and service workers is expected to grow 19% over the 2006 to 2016 decade.  This profession will more than likely always be around because animals need a voice!

 ASPCA: › Health & Wellness: medical, dental, vision, flexible spending accounts for health and dependent care, wellness › Compensation: paid time off, company holidays, sick leave, personnel leave › FUN: Halloween take your dog to work day, company picnic, annual holiday party

 Most jobs in this career offer benefits similar to the ASPCA  Also employees have first hand opportunities to adopt rescued animals if they find one that is perfect for them  Employees are able to see an abused animal become well and get a loving family

 Once an ignored area of the law, animal cruelty is now considered a good indicator of future criminal activity against humans and penalized harshly by the law.
