Case Study on Dyslexia

What is Dyslexia? It’s a learning disability that hinders an individual’s ability to spell, read, write, and sometimes speak. Dyslexic people are recognized to have a hard time learning words and poor decoding abilities.

Facts about Dyslexia It’s estimated that 70 to 85% of children w/learning disabilities are dyslexic. Dyslexics often times have more severe deficits in spelling than reading. They also have poor coordination, both motor and hand-eye coordination. Famous people w/ dyslexia: Einstein, Churchill, Babe Ruth, Lenin, DaVinci, Picasso, Disney, Edison.

Causes of Dyslexia The Inherited theory claims that dyslexia is caused by genetic factors and often runs in the family. Another theory states that this disorder is caused by brain damage on the left side or due to dietary deficiencies during pregnancy.

Complications of Dyslexia Lead to problems in school, being held back a grade. Loss of confidence/self-esteem in oneself Reading problems persists to adulthood, affecting job performance.

Treatment Should be treated in early childhood in order to gain the best results in adulthood. Goal: help overcome the learning difficulties Special programs aside from school, verbal exercises such as word match & rhyming. Extra learning assistance, individual approaches to each patient. Medical treatment: antihistamines, anti-motion sickness drugs, or various vitamin or mineral supplements.
