PHILIPPINE STUDY TOUR Student Volunteer Program in the School for Alangan Mangyan in the Philippines Sponsored by Bukid Foundation

Provides introductory immersion in community life in the Alangan Mangyan village Provides introduction to NGO volunteer work Provides introduction to the Philippines Provides opportunity for deeper participation in the future for participants Provides opportunity for meaningful travel Study Tour Participants March 2004 Objectives

3,000 kms.(1,864 miles) to the south of Japan 4 hours by air from Narita Area of 300,000 square kms., slightly smaller than Japan Capital is Manila The Philippines

150 kms. south of Manila 3 hours by inland transportation from Manila to Batangas 45 minutes by ferry from Batangas Port to Calapan Port Capital – Calapan, Mindoro Oriental Mindoro Island

Banilad village is the residence of the Alangan Mangyan hillside tribes people located 10 kms. From Calapan Population of 350 persons Mainly used as agricultural lands No electricity, running water or communications Stream provides water source Banilad Village

Description of the Alangan Mangyan Original inhabitants of Mindoro Island They belong to different tribes Mostly residing in the hills of Mindoro Makes their livelihood from agriculture

San Lorenzo Learning Center Banilad School for Alangan Mangyan Established in 1992 as an extension of the San Lorenzo Learning Center in Lalud Currently has 57 students studying elementary school from Grades I to VI

Features of the School Free education is provided for all students Financial support is provided by Bukid Foundation Provides integrated elementary education Five main subjects are taught: Languages (Filipino), Math, Science, Arts and Physical Education during the school year from June to March of the following year Administered by school directress and 3 teachers have shifts teaching the major subjects

Bukid Foundation A non-profit, non-governmental foundation established in 2002 in the Philippines The organization’s objective is to provide and manage funds to provide free education for Alangan Mangyan school children Administrative staff is composed of volunteer professionals from multiple disciplines

Participation Process Submit application form to Bukid Foundation to indicate intent to participate Make final decision to participate and payment of program costs Attend orientation seminar and workshop Attend pre-departure briefing Participate in the Philippine Study Tour Submit a final report after the tour to Bukid Foundation
