Launch of the Smokefree West Sussex Operational Plan and Stoptober 2014 Monday, 8 September 2014

“The mission of comprehensive tobacco control programme is to reduce disease, disability and death related to tobacco use. A comprehensive approach – one that optimizes synergy from applying a mix of educational, clinical, regulatory economic and social strategies has been established as the guiding principle for eliminating the health and economic burden of tobacco control.” US Surgeon General cited in the Tobacco Control Plan

Ten High Impact Changes Working in partnership is the building block of success Gather and use the full range of data to inform tobacco control Use tobacco control to tackle health inequalities Deliver consistent, coherent and coordinated communication An integrated stop smoking approach Build and sustain capacity in tobacco control Tackle Cheap and illicit tobacco Influence change through advocacy Helping young people to be tobacco free Maintain and promote smoke free environments

Working in partnership is the building block to success A comprehensive tobacco control programme involves multiple agencies and a clear commitment from senior officers at each partner organisation.

Gather and use the full range of data to inform tobacco control

Use tobacco control to tackle health inequalities The Marmot report on health inequalities identifies tobacco control as being central to any strategy to tackle health inequalities. Smoking prevalence in routine and manual workers in West Sussex has increased since 2009, up to 29.7%.

Deliver consistent, coherent and co-ordinated communication

An integrated stop smoking approach

Build and sustain capacity in tobacco control

Tackle Cheap and illicit tobacco

Influence change through advocacy Control-Alliance.aspx

Helping Young People to be tobacco free Stand alone interventions will have little impact. Youth prevention work should be part of all of the other strands as part of de-normalising smoking as a habit.

Maintain and promote smoke free environments
