Can You Buy Self Esteem? Commercials/Advertisements versus Public Service Announcements

Self Esteem?  What is self-esteem?  Is self-esteem a thing?  Can you see it or touch it?  Is it something that can be bought and sold?  Self-esteem is not one of the attributes shown on the OCDSB Community of Character. What attributes help build self-esteem?

General Mills Cereal Video  Who produced (made) the video?  What products are in the video?  Is anything being advertised (sold) in the video?  What message might we infer from this video? What are they saying will happen if you eat the product?

Dove Self-Esteem Program  Compare it to the last video. How similar are these videos (very similar, a little similar, not very similar)?  Who produced (made) this video?  Is anything being advertised (sold) in this video?  What is the message in the video? Could there be more than one message?

What’s Your Thing?  View the “What’s Your Thing?” video.  Who produced this video? (see next slide)  Is anything being advertised in the video?  What is the message?  How similar is this video to the second video?

Who Are Concerned Children’s Advertisers?

And the Winner is…  Working in groups, you will now judge each video for it’s value in promoting self-esteem.  In your groups, rate each video from 1 (poor) to 5 (great) based on each criteria. Add the total.  On the back of your sheet, please give some reasons to explain your ratings.
