What is the purpose? What to include? Practice

 To talk about the items outlined in your introduction.  This is where you include details that really prove your point and support your original claim (beauty pageants have a negative impact on participants self-esteem).  For really solid body paragraphs include evidence (quotes) to support your claims

 Believe it or not, there is a formula for the writing process! All you have to do is follow the formula and put in a few pretty words, and voila- you have a solid body paragraph! Formula for a solid body paragraph: Topic sentence Supporting Sentence (must relate to the topic sentence) Evidence to Support Claim (must relate to the topic sentence AND your overall claim) Explanation (how this evidence proves your point) +Concluding Sentence_____________________________________________ Body Paragraph

 Usually the first sentence in a formal academic paragraph.  It is the most general sentence in a paragraph.  this means there are not many details in the sentence.  The sentence introduces the overall idea that you are discussing in that paragraph. Find the topic sentence: My hometown is famous for several amazing natural features. First, it is noted for the Wheaton River, which is very wide and beautiful. Also, on the other side of the town is Wheaton Hill, which is unusual because it is very steep.

 My hometown is famous because it is located by Wheaton River, which is very wide, and because it is built near an unusually steep hill called Wheaton Hill.  Too specific and detailed. There will be nothing to talk about in the following sentences  There are two reasons why some people like to buy cars with automatic transmission and two reasons why others like cars with manual transmission.  Is addressing 2 different ideas (is not focused)  Clouds are white.  Topic is too general! Doesn’t give the reader enough information

1. Original Sentence: My hometown is famous because it is located by Wheaton River, which is very wide, and because it is built near an unusually steep hill called Wheaton Hill. Problem: Too specific and detailed. There will be nothing to talk about in the following sentences Improved Sentence: My hometown is famous for several amazing geographical features.

2. Original Sentence: There are two reasons why some people like to buy cars with automatic transmission and two reasons why others like cars with manual transmission. Problem: Is addressing 2 different ideas (is not focused) Improved Sentence: There are two reasons why some people like to buy cars with automatic transmission.

3. Original Sentence: Clouds are white. Problem: Topic is too general! Doesn’t give the reader enough information Improved Sentence: The shapes of clouds are determined by various factors.

 Before you write the sentences do the following: use the hand out given 1. Look at your introduction and identify the 3 items that support your claim (The general topics you outlined for discussion late in the essay. You also outlined this in your hamburger outline 2. Make sure your topics actually answer the why of your stance. Example: Why should sports figures receive punishments on the field for personal misbehaviors? 1- because they act as role models for young kids 2- because it sets an example for others on the team 3- because it helps them “learn their lesson”
