Rio is a Hyacinth Macaw from Brazil The Hyacinth Macaw is an endangered species due to over collection for the caged bird trade and habitat loss.

Rio, How high can you fly? Annual grass fires set by farmers can destroy nest trees. Regions previously inhabited by this macaw are now unsuitable due to cattle-ranching, hydroelectric and agriculture.

The Hyacinth Macaw has been hunted for food. Native People in Brazil use its feathers to make headdresses. The Hyacinth Macaw Project is an awareness project encouraging artificial nests and coordinating ranch owners to protect macaws
