Create Real-Time Awareness with Business Activity Monitoring iCEP – FIS September 2008 Sinan Sen Forschungszentrum Informatik - FZI, Karlsruhe, Germany WIR FORSCHEN FÜR SIE

Intro  Real-time and meaningful information about business processes can help business run better.  Processing real-time data for decision support has existed for several decades, e.g.  Business Activity Monitoring (BAM ) provides real- time access to key business metrics that are updated from captured events  The objective of BAM is to detect events, filter them and trigger actions instantly  BAM solutions are limited to real-world dashboard applications

State of the art BAM  Providing information in form of dashboards or alerts  The most important part of a BAM System, responsible for real-time processing of events  Event collection e.g. event stream or event cloud  Events produced somewhere in the business Events Event Absorption Event Processing and Filtering Event Display

The Idea of BAM-Cube services user events CEP Business process IT infrastructure Unstructured documents WWW / Speech Respond Adapt. Visualisation Actions event ontologies semantics Decision support BAM CUBE

USERRESPONDADAPTATION DECISION SUPPORT ACTION-READY DASHBOARD iCEP Engine evt Adaptive BAM Business Goals Current activities Actions, Decisions

Conclusion  Current BAM solutions are mainly limited to monitoring and visualisation of events instead of analyzing and providing appropriate decision support for business users.  More event sources have to be considered in order to get appropriate analyzing results  More event sources means more complex patterns exist  CEP is an essential part of future BAM solutions  Decision support in form of action-ready visualisation is essential for better user support  User‘s response should be captured within the BAM-system for more adaptive behaviour
