Who Gets Scholarships? Some Myths: – There are so many out there everyone can get them – Just the smart students get them – A scholarship can pay for me to go away for university

2014 summary cont. 20 students received MUN scholarships – Total: $42,990 – 1 $5,000 – 1$2,610 – 1 $2,550 – 1$2,130 – 15 $2,000 – 1$700 Note: In February, following midterms, 30 students were offered early entrance scholarships.

National Scholarships Loran Award – 112 awards – Leadership, community involvement, academics – Deadline: October 22 nd, October 29 th – School sponsors -3 applicants. To be considered for the school sponsored pool. Applications are due at the guidance office by 3pm on October 17 th – If not selected in this category, students can apply themselves in the direct pool group. Deadline :October 29 th – Two National Winners have come from Gonzaga in the last 5 years.

National Scholarships cont. Blythe Scholarship - full scholarship for three years to Cambridge University - 2 scholars chosen nationally - academic all roundedness, AP, IB Deadline: mid-October

National Scholarships cont. TD Scholarships for Community Leadership Twenty TD Scholarships for Community Leadership are awarded to students in their last year of high school or CEGEP (in Quebec) who have demonstrated leadership in improving their community. Each scholarship has a value of up to $70,000 and includes: Up to $10,000 for tuition per year (for up to a maximum of four years) $7,500 a year for living expenses (for up to a maximum of four years) Deadline: Nov. 28, 2014

Provincial Scholarships Based on Public Exam Marks – Junior Jubilee $2500 – Electoral District$1000 (3 per district) – Centenary$1000 (52 based on marks) – Constable Moss$1000 (son or daughter of RNC or RCMP)

Provincial Scholarships cont. Newfoundland and Labrador Education Foundation Scholarship - To recognize scholastic excellence, school leadership and community involvement, the Newfoundland and Labrador Education Foundation has established a scholarship awards program. -The recipients of these prestigious awards will be known as Newfoundland and Labrador English School District Scholars. Twenty-five students, ideally fifteen from the Eastern region, four from the Central and Western regions and two from the Labrador region will receive this distinction. The Newfoundland and Labrador English School District Scholars will be students who demonstrate outstanding school or community leadership and involvement in addition to academic achievement.

Provincial Scholarships cont. * MINIMUM ELIGIBILTY REQUIREMENTS - Awarded to full-time students in the year they graduate from high school in the Newfoundland and Labrador English School District. * MINIMUM CRITERIA – Awarded to students who have attained an Honours graduation status. – Awarded to students who have demonstrated leadership and involvement at the school and community levels. – Awarded to students who have been officially accepted to a recognized post-secondary institution for the following year. * ANNUAL AWARD Each scholarship will be established at $1000. The scholarship must be taken within one year after it is awarded.

MINIMUM CRITERIA WEIGHTINGS (100 POINTS) Memorial University Entrance Average 60 points School Leadership 20 points (Examples: student council, team captain, peer counsellor, etc.) Community Leadership 10 points (Examples: volunteer in community, church, youth leader, etc.) 500 Word Essay 10 points Total: 100 points APPLICATION PROCEDURE Each applicant must apply in writing to the Foundation and include: – Completed application form; Completed application form – An essay describing their school or community leadership and involvement, up to a maximum of 500 words; – Two letters of support from group(s) or individual(s) who can confirm the student's leadership and community involvement; and, – A letter of recommendation from a teacher or school administrator. (This is a separate letter from the two support letters) Applications are to be submitted (received or postmarked) no later than June 27, 2014 to:

University-Colleges Amount and type vary from place to place Most universities automatically consider students when they apply Some may require a separate letter/application Some based solely on marks others on marks and well-roundedness Applications after January Exams ( Feb.-April)

Universities-Colleges cont. Memorial University – 90% $ 2000 after June Exams (changed as of last year) – 90 + $ 3500 > 90 % + all rounded Dr. Leslie Harris Award ($4000 x 4yrs= $16000) 12 awards MUN Alumni ($5000 x 5yrs=$25,000) 6 awards Warren and Catherine Ball ($7500 x 4 yrs=$30,000) 2 awards

Unions and Associations Usually smaller amounts and deadlines vary – NLTA – NAPE – CUPE – Knights of Columbus – Royal Canadian Legion – Parent’s place of work

Specific Scholarships are offered from very specific groups or for specific fields of study Students are encouraged to check for these awards Some examples: – Native origin – Cartoonists – NL Housing – Tourism NL
