Photography Careers Alison Adkins My name is Alison Adkins, and this is my power point on photography careers. Alison Adkins

Sports Photography Branch of photojournalism Vernacular photography Editorial purposes Newspapers, magazines, advertisement Difficulties depend on sport Found everywhere Job popularity: Expected to grow Sports photography can be either amateur or professional. Professional sports photography is a branch of photojournalism while amateur photography is a type of vernacular photography. Many newspapers, magazines, and advertisement companies hire sports photographers. Depending on the sport, the difficulties vary. Photographers will have to find access to VIP positions for the best pictures at professional games and be present at the field of action for the best pictures. In the next 5 years, the popularity of sports photography is expected to grow.

Sports Photography Equipment Digital Single Lens Reflex camera (DSLR) High shutter speeds Interchangeable lenses with 50mm Can be zoomed to 300mm Monopod/tripod Canon EOS-1D Mark IV Nikon D4 The best cameras are Digital Single Lens Reflex cameras with high shutter speeds. The shutter speeds help freeze motion and capture better pictures. Wide lenses are also a must. It is easier to take a wide shot of a subject and crop it later rather than take a close up of a fast moving object. Monopods or tripods help to stabilize the camera for clearer, less shaky pictures. Some popular cameras used are the Canon EOS-1D Mark IV and the Nikon D4.

Sports Photography Location, location, location Shutter speed Technique Location, location, location VIP spots Distance Shutter speed Shutter priority mode/manual High ISO speed Photos in burst mode Out of focus background to isolate subject Location is very important in sports photography. Long distance and special VIP sports are the best. The shutter speed must be fast as well as the ISO speed. Most of the time, photographers create a picture with an out of focus background. This is to help isolate the subject, which is usually fast moving, and helps to create a clearer picture. One example is the motorcycle picture to the right.

Sports Photography Bachelor degree in photography or journalism Average salary: $24,000 Education Bachelor degree in photography or journalism 1 year intensive certificate program Associates degree to learn technical skills and business knowledge Coursework History of photography The average salary of a sports photography is $24,000, but this varies depending on a photographers company. A bachelor degree in photography or journalism is required, as well as participation in a 1 year certificate program. Associates degree are recommended to learn technical skills and business knowledge. Coursework for an associates degree include working in dark rooms, photo manipulation software, lighting, color choice, subject positioning, and technical equipment work as well as study of the history of photography.

Forensic Photography Forensic imaging/crime scene photography Reproducing crime/accident scenes with photography Evidence collecting, court aid Photos of victims Objects/Places involved with crimes Car crashes Job popularity: Grow 12% Forensic photography is a field of photography that helps to recreate crime scenes or accident scenes. It is a type of forensic imaging. Photos are used in evidence collecting or to aid in courts. Many times, photographers take pictures of victims, objects, places, or witnesses involved in crimes or accidents. Over the next few years, forensic photography is expected to grow in popularity by 12%.

Forensic Photography Equipment Camera Filters Electronic flashes Lenses Tripod Measuring Device Gray card Forensic photographers use cameras, filters, electronic flashes, different lenses, tripods or monopods and gray cards. Measuring devices are used to ensure viewers can determine the size of objects, and to prove the camera did not alter distances. Photographers will shoot in black and white to help point out specific details, or special filters for fingerprinting or to search for staining. Think of the TV show CSI. They take pictures of EVERYTHING in order to ensure nothing is left out.

Forensic Photography Technique Lighting Shutter speeds Camera mechanics Digital imaging Use of color Fingerprinting Different lightings, shutter speeds, camera mechanics, digital imaging, use of color and fingerprinting are all different skills and techniques forensic photographers need to know. Each helps to bring out the best in crime scenes.

Forensic Photography Average salary: $62,000 Education High School Education Photography, processing and forensics courses Degree Photojournalism, scientific/commercial photography The average salary of a forensic photographer is $62,000. Most photographers are not required to have a degree, although it is recommended, and a basic understanding of photography from high school courses could justify. They must be experienced in photojournalism, scientific photography or commercial photography. Degrees are required to work in higher institutions such as the CSI and police forces.

Wildlife Photography Publications of animals, plants and environments Convey larger picture of wild Messages through photos Freelance or hired Challenges/risks vary A wildlife photographer creates publications of animals, plants, and environments. Their job is to help convey a larger picture of the wild and create messages through their photos. These photographers work to create the best of the environment and bring its beauty back to people back home. They can be either freelance or hired professionals, and depending on the area they work in, challenges and risks may vary.

Wildlife Photography Equipment DSLR Lenses Wide Angle Telephoto Zoom Tripod Tripod Head Filters In order to become a wildlife photographer, some required equipment include DSLR cameras, different lenses, tripods, tripod heads and filters. Much like sports photography, cameras with fast shutter speeds and wide lenses are recommended. They help to capture clearer images of motion such as the birds and whale to the left.

Wildlife Photography Technique Manual focus Fast shutter speed Understand environment Respect Minimal impact Wildlife photographers use manual focus rather than automatic to have more control over their photos and to create clearer images. Fast shutter speeds help with motion. Wildlife photographers must also learn to understand the environment and use it as their tool while respecting it. The job of a wildlife photographer is to leave minimal impact on the environment while utilizing it to enhance their photos.

Wildlife Photography Average salary: $41,000 Education College Degree On-the-job Training Workshops Not required for freelance photographers Understanding of cultural context, geography, history, customs The average salary of a wildlife photography is $41,000 dollars, but this varies depending on whether the photographer is freelance or hired. The salary will differ from company to company, and certain types of pictures sell for more than others. Professional photographers require a college degree, and on-the-job training as assistants to current wildlife photographers. Both freelance and hired photographers need an understanding of cultural context, geography, history, and customs.
