The Deuteronomic History The Books included: §Joshua §Judges §I-II Samuel §I-II Kings

THE BOOK OF JOSHUA Joshua: the successor of Moses. The purpose of the book is to demonstrate God's fidelity in giving to the Israelites the land he had promised them for an inheritance (Gen 15:18-20; Jos 1:2-4; 21:41-43; 23:14-16).

THE BOOK OF JOSHUA Joshua: the successor of Moses. The purpose of the book is to demonstrate God's fidelity in giving to the Israelites the land he had promised them for an inheritance.

THE BOOK OF JOSHUA Genesis 15:18-21 It was on that occasion that the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying: "To your descendants I give this land, from the Wadi of Egypt to the Great River (the Euphrates), the land of the Kenites, the Kenizzites, the Kadmonites, the Hittites, the Perizzites, the Rephaim, the Amorites, the Canaanites, the Girgashites, and the Jebusites."

THE BOOK OF JOSHUA Joshua 1:1-4 After Moses, the servant of the LORD, had died, the LORD said to Moses' aide Joshua, son of Nun: "My servant Moses is dead. So prepare to cross the Jordan here, with all the people into the land I will give the Israelites. As I promised Moses, I will deliver to you every place where you set foot. Your domain is to be all the land of the Hittites, from the desert and from Lebanon east to the great river Euphrates and west to the Great Sea.”

THE BOOK OF JOSHUA Joshua 21:43-44 And so the LORD gave Israel all the land he had sworn to their fathers he would give them. Once they had conquered and occupied it, the LORD gave them peace on every side, just as he had promised their fathers. Not one of their enemies could withstand them; the LORD brought all their enemies under their power.

THE BOOK OF JOSHUA Josh 23:1-3 Many years later, after the LORD had given the Israelites rest from all their enemies round about them, and when Joshua was old and advanced in years, he summoned all Israel (including their elders, leaders, judges and officers) and said to them: "I am old and advanced in years. You have seen all that the LORD, your God, has done for you against all these nations; for it has been the LORD, your God, himself who fought for you.

THE BOOK OF JOSHUA Josh 23:14-15 "Today, as you see, I am going the way of all men. So now acknowledge with your whole heart and soul that not one of all the promises the LORD, your God, made to you has remained unfulfilled. Every promise has been fulfilled for you, with not one single exception. " But just as every promise the LORD, your God, made to you has been fulfilled for you, so will he fulfill every threat, even so far as to exterminate you from this good land which the LORD, your God, has given you.

THE BOOK OF JOSHUA Josh 23:16 "If you transgress the covenant of the LORD, your God, which he enjoined on you, serve other gods and worship them, the anger of the LORD will flare up against you and you will quickly perish from the good land which he has given you."

THE BOOK OF JOSHUA occupation of the country begins with the crossing of the Jordan and the conquest of Jericho (Joshua 1-6), followed by a first foothold on the Palestinian mountain range, at Ai, Bethel, and Gibeon (Joshua 7-9) two sweeping campaigns against the city states in the south of the country (Joshua 10) and in the north (Joshua 11) with a summary in Joshua 12.

THE BOOK OF JOSHUA The broad claim to total sovereignty is spelled out by a combined list of tribal boundaries and of the towns contained within each area or administrative district (Joshua 13-19), including cities of asylum and cities for the Levites (Joshua 20:21).

THE BOOK OF JOSHUA The book closes with a narrative about the tribes east of the Jordan (Joshua 22), a warning speech by Joshua (Joshua 23), and a renewal at Shechem (Joshua 24) of the covenant with the Lord, already affirmed there near the beginning of the conquest (Joshua 8:30-35).

THE BOOK OF JOSHUA Like the books which precede it, the Book of Joshua was built up by a long and complex process of editing traditional materials. Both Jewish and Christian believers have always regarded it as inspired.

THE BOOK OF JOSHUA The entire history of the conquest of the Promised Land is a prophecy of the spiritual conquest of the world through the Church under the leadership of Jesus the Messiah.

THE BOOK OF JOSHUA The Book of Joshua may be divided as follows: I: Conquest of Canaan (Jos 1:1-12:24) II: Division of the Land (Jos 13:1-21:45) III: Return of the Transjordan Tribes and Joshua's Farewell (Jos 22:1-24:33)
