Irregular Verbs

volo, velle, volui, no 4 th p.p. What is the first thing you notice about this verb that indicates it is irregular? Is there anything else that seems unusual? What principal part seems to be regular? What conclusions can we make? We can conclude that the verb is regular in the perfect pluperfect and future perfect tenses.

Irregular Verbs volo, velle, volui - want, be willing, wish nolo, nolle, nolui - -not want, be unwilling, not wish malo, malle, malui - prefer

Things to Think About What do these verbs have in common? volo nolo malo velle nolle malle

Again what similarities do you see? volui nolui malui

Let’s look at the 1 st principal part vo no ma lo

Lets look at the 2 nd principal part ve no ma lle

Important Information The present tense of these verbs is the most irregular. You will have to memorize the forms. The imperfect and future are irregular because they do not follow a set of steps, but… The imperfect and future are easier because they have an easier pattern to learn. There are NO PASSIVE forms to learn.

Present Tense of volo volo - I want, I am willing, I wish vis – you want, you are willing you wish vult – he (etc.) wants, he is willing, he wishes volumus – we want, we are willing, we wish vultis – you want, you are willing you wish volunt – they want, they are willing, they wish

Present tense of nolo nolo - I do not want, I am unwilling, I do not wish non vis – you do not want, you are unwilling you do not wish non vult – he (etc.) does not want, he is unwilling, he does not wish nolumus – we do not want, we are unwilling, we do not wish non vultis – you do not want, you are unwilling you do not wish nolunt – they do not want, they are unwilling, they do not wish

Present tense of malo malo - I prefer mavis – you prefer mavult – he (etc.) prefers malumus – prefer mavultis – prefer malunt – prefer

Now let’s compare them volonolomalo visnon vismavis vultnon vultmavult volumus nolumusmalumus vultisnon vultismavultis voluntnoluntmalunt

Now look at these volonolomalo volumus nolumusmalumus voluntnoluntmalunt

So its all about taking the time to see the patterns.
