Lesson #45 Naming Polygons

By Ian Graven Of 803

These are all polygons. A polygon is a 3 or more straight-sided figure

These are not polygons These all have at least 1 rounded side.

Here are some special polygons. rectangle square A rectangle is a square which the 4 sides are not the same. A square has 4 sides and angles that are the same.

Rhombus parallelograms A rhombus is a square tilted. That means that all the sides are the same but the angles are not the same. A parallelogram is a rectangle tilted. That means that 2 sides are the same and the other 2 are the same but they all have different angles.Opposite sides are parallel.

Trapezoid Dart A dart is a 4 sided figure in the shape of a arrowhead. A 4 sided figure with a set of parallel bases.

Kite A kite is a figure with one line of symmetry.

There are many types of polygons The way you find out the type of a polygon is by counting the number of sides A 3 sided polygon is called a triangle

A 4 sided polygon is called a quadrilateral

A 5 sided polygon is called a pentagon

A 6 sided polygon is called a hexagon A 7 sided polygon is called a heptagon

Then there is an octagon which has 8 sides Nonagon = 9 sides Decagon = 10 sides

Here is a review of the polygons Triangle 3 Quadrilateral 4 Pentagon 5 Hexagon 6 Heptagon 7 Octagon 8 Nonagon 9 Decagon 10

Here are some example questions Name this shape

The answer is a pentagon because this shape has five sides

Or the question could be What is the name of the polygon with 5 sides

The answer is pentagon because a pentagon has 5 sides

And now… 10 Practice Questions

Question # 1 Name this shape. A: quadrilateral B: triangle C: octagon

Question # 2 Which figure has 7 sides? A: heptagon B: hexagon C: octagon

Question # 3 Which figure has 9 sides? A: decagon B: pentagon C: nonagon
