 Leadership that goes beyond the transaction between leaders and followers and literally transforms or changes situations and circumstances through personal example and by establishing vision.  Followers of transformational leaders: ◦ Become motivated to work harder ◦ Become more sensitive to moral and ethical issues ◦ Think and act more like leaders

 Produces significant organizational change due to: high levels of intrinsic motivation, trust, commitment and loyalty from followers  The best transformational leaders use both transformational and transactional leadership

 Both received PhD's in speech communication at the University of Denver  Focus on researching leadership and communication  Published a book together titled “Leadership: A Communication Perspective”  Have come up with 5 characteristics of a transformational leader

 Creative: seek new markets, products and clients and encourage innovation and experimentation  Interactive: communicate with followers to define and articulate ideas  Visionary: know where an organization is headed, providing purpose and commitment to others  Empowering: give power away to others and make them feel powerful  Passionate: love their jobs and the people they work with, motivating others to perform at their highest level
