5 JOB ROLES IN THE INDUSTRY

Industry: TV Departments: Sound What do they do? A boom operator controls the long boom arm, This would be hand held or mounted on a dolly. They have to have the boom as close to the action as they can get without it being visible in the shot. They work on location and in the studio under the sound supervisor or sound recorder. Qualifications needed No qualifications are needed to be a boom operator. But you do need to show a interest in sound and an understanding of the physical aspects. Industry: TV Departments: Production What do they do? A director is responsible for the look and sound of a production. They work closely with producers and writers. They are responsible to make sure that the finished production stays true to the original concept. They work across all genres. Qualifications needed You don’t need a specific qualification to become a TV director. A degree in a media related, drama or specialist subject would help you. You will need a lot of experience and knowledge of the production process. Boom Operator Director

Industry: TV Departments: Lighting What do they do? A lighting director is the most senior role in television lighting departments. They use the script or brief from the production team to design the look required for each shot. They work with the rest of the lighting department to set up and operate the lights and accessories. Qualifications needed There are no specifications needed but there are some basic lighting courses available. Practical industry experience is vital, skills are learnt on the job and kept up to date by attending demonstrations and exhibitions. Industries: Film/TV Departments: Hair and makeup What do they do? Make-up and hair artists work to create styles that meet the productions requirements. They oversee make-up and hair continually throughout filming. They are employed throughout pre-production and production. They usually work on a freelance basis. Whilst working on a production they work under the make-up and hair designers. Qualifications needed You will need at least a level 2 vocational qualification in media make-up and a level 2-3 NVQ in hairdressing or the equivalent of two years experience. Lighting DirectorMake-up and Hair Artist

Industry: Marketing, Advertising and PR Department: Post production What do they do? Art directors work in a team with a copywriter. The copywriter provides the words to go with the art directors visual images. Each project begins with a briefing about the client, the product, the target audience and the advertising message to be put across. The art director would often work on several projects at once under the creative directors supervision. There work involves: working closely with the copywriter to create original ideas that fit the brief producing storyboards (for TV commercials) or sketches of your ideas presenting the ideas to the agency’s creative director and account team helping to present ideas to the client making any changes that the client asks for getting graphic designers, artists, photographers or film companies to produce the artwork or TV ads choosing studios or locations and attending photo or film shoots making sure that budgets and deadlines are met overseeing the final editing of the finished advertisements. Qualifications needed Most art directors have studied design and have a BTEC, HND or Degree in graphic design, advertising design, illustration or fine art. Advertising Art Director
