Presentation transcript:

Italy In Italy, January 6, not December 25, is the date when children receive gifts. The gifts come from a fairy called “La Befana” who supposedly was unfriendly to the Holy Family during their journey to Egypt, and now must atone by making children happy.

Russia A similar legend comes from Russia, where an old woman, or “Babushka,” must search eternally for the Christ Child, granting presents in his name, because she ignored the Magis’ urging to “come and worship him.”

Spain In Spain children receive gifts from “El Niño” (the Christ Child) on Christmas and from “Los Tres Rejes Magos” (the three kings) on Epiphany. Some big towns and cities have Epiphany Parades with each King having a big float that is shaped like a camel. Sometimes there are real camels in the parade! A special cake called ‘Roscón’ is eaten at Epiphany. Roscón means ‘ring shape roll’. It is very doughy and is bought from a bakery on Epiphany morning. Roscón can be filled with cream or chocolate and contain a little gift.

France It is customary in France to eat from a Galette des Rois (“Kings’ Cake”), which holds a miniature figurine inside and a crown on top. The person finding the figurine in the cake is ruler or king for the day (Roi de la Fève). So whenever one has an unexpected, pleasant discovery -- "trouver la fève au gâteau" -- a lucky find.

Austria In Bavaria and Austria. beginning with New Year’s Day and through to the 6 th. January, children dressed as the kings, (the “Star Singers”) and holding up a large star, go from door to door, carolling and singing a Three Kings' song. For this they receive sweets or money which usually goes to charity.

Germany In Germany, Epiphany is called the day of the Heilige Drei Könige (the Wise Men,Three Kings, or the Magi). Traditionally, the initials of the Three Kings -- C+M+B -- plus the year are inscribed in chalk over doorways in German-speaking countries on the eve of the 6 th. January to protect house and home.

Poland The evening of the Feast of the Three Kings is called Szczodry Wieczor, which means a bountiful or plentiful evening. On the Feast, the family takes blessed chalk, foil, and incense, marking the home with the initials of the Three Wise Men along with the year. This is done to bless the home and provide protection for those within against illness and misfortune.
