 What makes things ‘go’?  Wire  Fire and sparks  Plus and minus  Short circuit  Solar  Car battery  Batteries  Electricity  Magnets  Light bulb  Sun  Food

 What is a cell and how is it different to a battery?  What other cells do we know?  What are different types of energy?

 In the first explore lesson, students simply manipulated the different elements of a circuit to see if they could make it work.

 They used their science journals to sketch the circuits they had made.

 Involved adding different elements to the circuit including an LED light, light globe, battery pack and buzzer.  They were then asked to manipulate their circuits and record their observations (eg. The fan spun faster when a 9V battery was attached as opposed to two AA batteries).

 Students researched international signals and learned about morse code, buoys, traffic lights, maritime signal flags etc.

 This became an excellent opportunity to link the HSIE unit – Global connections. Important to link to local context and students eg: boat licenses and driving, electricity in their homes, transformation into light, heat and sound.

 They then sketched a design for their own replica of an international light signals.
