Presentation transcript:

 BORN IN BELFAST, NORTHERN IRELAND ON JULY 15,1943  HER FATHER WAS AN ARCHITECT AND AN PASSIOINATE READER. THROUGH HIS BOOKS, JOCELYN WAS INTRODUCED TO THE WORLD OF ASTRONOMY.  HER FAMILY AND STAFF AT THE ARMAGH OBSERVATORY ENCOURAGED HER INTREST IN ASTRONOMY THE EARLY YEARS

 Armagh observatory was established in 1789

 IN 1965, BELL EARNED A DEGREE IN PHYSICS FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF GLASGOW.  THAT SAME YEAR SHE BEGAN TO WORK ON HER PH.D AT CAMBRIDGE UNIVERSITY  STUDIED ALMOST EVERY WAVE SPECTRUM IN ASTRONOMY  RECEIVED HER PH.D IN RADIO ASTRONOMY FROM CAMBRIDGE IN 1968 HER STUDIES

 WHILE UNDER THE DIRECTION OF ANTHONY HEWISH AT CAMBRIDGE JOCELYN BELL DISCOVERED PULSARS  BELLS FIRST TWO YEARS IN CAMBRIDGE WERE SPENT ASSISTING THE CONSTRUCTION OF AN 81.5 MEGAHERTZ RADIO TELESCOPE  SHE WAS ALSO ELECTED AS A FELLOW OF THE ROYAL ASTONOMICAL SOCIETY IN 1969

 Pulsars are stars that release regular bursts of radio waves and the discovery ranks as an important milestone in the history of astrophysics.

 THE TELESCOPE THAT BELL USED TO DISCOVER THE FIRST PULSAR GENRATED METERS OF DATA EVERY 4 DAYS

 BELL IS MARRIED  SINCE LEAVING CAMBRIDGE BELL-BURNELL HAS SYUDIED THE SKY IN ALMOST EVERY REGION OF THE ELECTROMAGNETIC SPECTRUM  TODAY JOCELYN CONCERNS AND EFFORTS ARE DIRECTED TOWARDS THE ADVANCEMENT OF ASTRONOMY AND SHE IS DEEPLY INVOLVED IN THE TEACHING AND PUBLIC UNDERSTANDING OF PHYSICS AND ASTRONOMY.

 Jocelyn Bell Burnell was made a Dame in 2008 and a year later became the first ever female President of the Institute of Physics.
