Teaching Strategies with ELL Students in the Preschool Setting

DOTS Determine what I know Observe Talk to peers as we elaborate Summarize what we learned

STORY BAG Students take items out of a bag and decide if they will see it at the circles or not. While some items were realia others were pictures of items seen and not seen at the circus.

This is what the chart looked liked after the students made their predictions of what they would or would see at the circus. Follow up activity: After we attended the circus we returned to the chart and corrected the predictions to truly show what we did see at the circus.

Story Bag strategy used to predict what the students felt we would see at the circus.

Pictures and Words

In this activity the students are matching pictures and stick puppets to there corresponding words/signs as located in the story book.

IDEA

Vocabulary Quilt

Students worked in heterogeneous pairs (plus one group of 3) to complete the vocabulary quilt. Other groupings throughout the lesson included individuals sharing their ideas and listening to others share, as well as whole group discussion about the vocabulary definitions While students worked in pairs, I walked around the room and conferenced with groups in order to assess understanding and elicit student talk about the key vocabulary.

Students were able to write single words, sentences, or draw pictures to

As a whole group, we discussed the definitions of each of the vocabulary words and students were able to share their own ideas.
