Some are fishermen; Savannah’s family catches wild shrimp. On 20 April 2010 Savannah saw some bad news on TV. There was an explosion on Deepwater Horizon, a big oil rig in the Gulf of Mexico. Oil spill disaster

 The explosion killed eleven people and damaged the rig. Oil spilled out of the ground into the sea. BP, the company who owned the rig, could not stop the oil coming out. They couldn’t stop it for three month! Four hundred and sixty thousand tonnes of oil went into the water killing thousands of birds and poisoning the sea. The oil spell was an environmental disaster. Fishing was banned in more than 200,000 square kilometres of the Gulf of Mexico. Like many other people, the shrimp fishermen of Bon Secour couldn’t make any money. Cleaning up the oil became a big and important job. Oil spill disaster

 BP and the American army put a barrier around Deeppwater Horizon. They wanted to stop the oil from getting to the coast. The barrier was more than 55 kilometres long, but it didn’t stop the oil. Savannah and her friends also wanted to help. Savanah cleaned the oil off birds. Some of her friends cleaned the oil off the beaches. Cleaning up the oil spill will cost millions of dollars, and will take many years. Oil spill disaster
