Requirements of BSW Program You are required to successfully complete 2 Field Practicums that you are responsible for finding SWRK 3150 SWRK 4120 Each is 420 hours in length Each is 12 credit hours

Once you have secured your field placement………….. All of the Field information has been received and approved You will receive a letter that states where and when to Register for your Focus Course AND your Field Practicum.

Whose responsibility is it to locate a Field Practicum? It is the student’s responsibility. If you are already working at a social service agency you may choose to do your practicum in your place of employment. Or you may choose a community social service agency where you are not employed but which is of interest to you.

Field Practicums are the “doing” The purpose of field instruction is to ensure that students successfully complete two social work practice experiences in community agency settings. We want our students to apply the knowledge and theories from their academic courses to the field setting.

Field Practicum Possibilities... Child and Family Services Corrections/Justice School Social Work Mental health services Aging (community and institutional) Disability services ( emotional/cognitive/physical) Women’s shelters and resource agencies Health Authorities/Hospitals Non government organizations

Where are you thinking of doing your practicum? Use the chat to identify your interests Is there any agency that we might have missed?

Criminal Record checks and Child abuse registry checks Ensure that your criminal record checks and child abuse registry checks are up to date. When you go for your interview ask if they are a requirement, prior to entering placement If required apply now…………………

Immunization Most health Authorities require you to have your immunization records up to date. Please ensure that you ask if you are working in a medical/school setting or a setting where immunization is driven by policies in the agency.

How do I get there from here? In general students have 2 options: Doing your Practicum at your place of employment Doing your practicum at a new/alternate community site

If you Choose to do your Practicum at your place of employment: Discuss your plan with the Agency Director Your Practicum has to be in a program different than your day to day employment Your Field Instructor must be someone other than your day to day supervisor Your Field Instructor must have a degree in Social Work

If you Choose to do your Practicum at an alternate community site : You should treat your search for a Practicum site as you would a job search Identify a Field of interest Research the Agency/Organization of interest Update your resume and covering letter Covering letter should identify your passion/interest in the agency Make personal contact with the agency Be prepared to go for a personal interview We are prepared to intervene at any point in this process

While in Field the student is expected to demonstrate: The ability to take a comprehensive approach to the practice of social work. A grasp of knowledge for practice, and the theories and principles that guide it. Commitment to carry out social work activities in accordance with ethical value based practice and continued professional development. Use of a range of assessment and relationship skills needed to plan and to intervene effectively; and Commitment to social inquiry that includes a critical approach to theory and practice.
