Study Habits: the real deal

Personal Reflection: How Do Students Study?  Read about three student types  In what ways are they different?  Highlight or underline the differences between Student Type 1, Student Type 2, and Student Type 3  Which student do I resemble? Which behaviors do I do? Why?  Write in your journal about which study behaviors are most like the ones you do. You won’t be sharing this part.

Think as a Group:  Which Student Types are happier or more satisfied at school? Why, do you think?  Which Student Types are more academically successful? Why, do you think?

Think by yourself:  What do I want to include in my own study behaviors to become more successful?  Write your goals in your journal  (why aren’t you asking to work together on this?!)

The Real Deal About Study Habits  Student Type 1: more frustrated, unsure, less joyful at school  Student Type 3: more successful in school, feel more confident and satisfied in school  Student Type 2: in between

Student Type 3’s Advantages  Many heads on one assignment  Talked through big ideas resulting in less homework time  Help from friends made it less confusing and corrected mistakes better and earlier  Found teacher’s mistakes earlier and knew it was tough for everyone  Had more FUN, were more relaxed about challenges, felt like social time  Saw what challenged everyone and what was a personal challenge  Felt like they belonged and were capable of even more challenges

Student Type 1’s Drawbacks  Spent more time on assignments  Less sure about doing things right  Seemed like everyone else was able to do it better than they were, so they doubted themselves  Missed out on friend and family time and felt a LOT of stress  Escaped stress by avoiding work or new challenges, resulting in less academic success  “I’m not smart enough” “I’m not a good student” “I don’t belong here”

Can You Change? HECK YES! Type 1 Students + Type 3 Study Habits =  SCHOOL SUCCESS,  MORE SELF-CONFIDENCE,  SATISFACTION WITH SCHOOL,  AND SOCIAL CONNECTION
