CMS:Children Monitoring System By: Naif Almadhayan | Steven Smith | Mohammad Safar

Introduction Problems Solved!  Problems Solved:  Children Safety.  Since children specifically at young age can be pretty active and might end up in dangerous areas while parents are busy or not aware.  Our Device will help ease monitoring of children by alarming the parents every time they access areas they shouldn’t be accessing.  Allows parents to multitask while caring for their children.  Parents have responsibilities in their daily life on top of caring and monitoring for their children. So in order to let them take care of anything life related while having some ease of mind about their child’s safety our device will help them monitor their child’s activity.  Marketing plan:  Residential.  Company.  Future developments.

Requirements  The system has three main components:  Inputs(RFID Tags)  The inputs for the system are going to be low frequency passive RFID Tags with frequency of 125 KHz. The tags will have a range of 50 cm.  We are going to use rewritable tags to store two types of information for two alarms (An alert alarm – A danger alarm)  Output: the android phone application:  The output will be paired with the main device through the Bluetooth modem.  It is required to operate the alarm once certain inputs have been received through the Arduino Uno microcontroller.  The Application will be made with MIT App inventor which can be found in the MIT website.

 Main Device (Wearable wristband):  Must be able to capture and process signals that are cm away.  This is going to be done by using the parallax RF reader that can process information at 2400 BPS.  The built in antenna will be changed for an external antenna that with the desired range and is able to capture low frequencies. ( KHz)  After processing the signal the information should be processed into certain outputs and relayed to the alarm device(Android phone):  This will be achieved using the Arduino Uno microcontroller paired with a Bluetooth modem to communicate with the android phone. Requirements

Prototype sub systems Arduino and parallax RF reader connections were done using the fritzing software

Design & Diagrams  This chart shows the sequence of how our device functions.  It includes each state and possible inputs.  The states are defined and can be easily followed.

Technical Trades Chosen Vs Possible choices Low Frequency passive RFID Tags Meets our frequency requirements and range the only reason for choosing this was due to the price (Chosen) Low Frequency active RFID tags Met the requirements of 125 KHz has great range but the price doesn’t make it viable for commercial use RF Antenna External antenna range of approximately 1 meter price range (15$) (Chosen) Built in antenna (with the Reader) For the required range of ( cm) the price for low RF reader + antenna exceeds 400$ Parallax RF Reader Long range RF Reader Both have the required read frequency ( KHz) The only difference is the price and weight The price difference is about 200$ including the external RF antenna chosen. Chose Parallax RF Reader Arduino Uno MicrocontrollerBest option for our project. Compatible with the Bluetooth modem and the compiler we are using. Bluetooth modemChose the Bluesmirf Bluetooth modem comes compatible and code ready to use with the Arduino Uno Microcontroller App press Originally chose it Easy visual coding and cheap MIT App Inventor (Chosen) Free Compatible with android phones and Arduino microcontroller Rechargeable BatterySmall lithium cell batteries

Testing and integration  Importance of testing!  Special tests required.

 RFID Tags- In test the RFID tags, the range at which the signal is detected must be at a range of 50 cm and a frequency of 125 kHz. Since there are two types of Tags, each must be tested separately.  Receiver Antenna- The verification of the receiver’s antenna to receive the signals from the RFID tags is to be analyzed due to the importance of proper functionality. Since the antenna is inside of the wristband, the device must be a cm in size, and capture low frequencies around kHz  RFID Reader- In order to verify and test the RFID reader, we must make sure that the receiver receives the signal, and is able to send it to the appropriate output. The reader must capture and process signals around cm away.  Arduino Microcontroller- Since the Arduino microcontroller is going to be on the child, the device must be small and light. The device’s physical dimensions at 3 X.08 X 2.5 inches, and the weight at 0.3 ounces.  Bluetooth modem- To test the BlueSmirf Silver Bluetooth, just check to see if it is compatible with the Microcontroller, and make sure it can be read by the smartphone.  Smartphone Application- verifying the functionality of the smartphone application can be done by downloading the program and checking to see if there is any response from the signal being transmitted.

Testing as a system  Testing to see if the system is functioning properly can be conducted by having the parent place the RFID tags in the desired areas. The parent can wear the device, and pass though the areas to see if one or both of the RFID tags are picked up my the receivers’ antenna. To make sure the child can’t crawl or climb over the RFID tags, the parents can demonstrate these actions by moving the device to where the child’s perceived to be. The microcontroller must process the information so that the Bluetooth can send it to the smartphone application for the alert.

Risks –Main concerns- Receiver (Size – (Safe/durable)-Efficient) The performance vs 10% increase in cost50% Safety and durability 100gm increase in weight 500gm Reduce size using alternatives Compatibility and time

Risks –Main concerns- Receiver size: Concern: The receiver has to be small and light yet still pick up the RFID tag’s frequencies. Plan: so the choice made between possible receiver’s depended only on the various prices of receivers. We went with the smaller cheaper choice. Safety on Child: Concern: Since the device is going the be worn by the child, it has to be small and light enough to not hinder the child in any way, but big enough so the child doesn’t choke on it. Plan: Our plan to deal with this issue is to develop safe packaging of the system so until we complete our prototype we will research safe ideas for packaging.

Risks –Main concerns- Durability in Different Conditions: Concern: The internal components in the device are fragile, so there many be a potential for breakage. Plan: It is true that the internal parts of the receiver are fragile however; like the safety part this issue can be resolved by developing a good packaging model once the prototype has been built. Cost vs. Performance: Concern: Some of the components that has the required specifications for our systems are expensive and might increase the cost of the product. Plan: Find alternatives that does the job while still maintaining the driving requirements. One example we had to do was changing the built in antenna of our RF reader with a custom one that has the same functionalities of the expensive readers
