Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Art 115: DOF – Illusion of sharpness I llusion: Sharpness Physics says that only the thin plane of focus can actually be sharp. Anything else appearing to be sharp is a matter of illusion. Therefore, DOF (depth of field) relies on the appearance of sharpness. And that illusion is related directly to the actual image size and the viewer’s distance to the image. Sharpness is a result complex set of stuff coming together to create a magic reality That makes photographers magicians in part…

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Art 115: DOF – Illusion of sharpness C ircle of Confusion: There is a specific formula to the appearance of sharpness and it is called the ‘circle of confusion’. I’ve already like that phrase. If you want to know more about it, please Google it. I always found the scientific definition to be not satisfying and not practical in daily use.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Art 115: DOF – Illusion of sharpness F /stop Size: Relative F/8 on any lens results in a predictable amount of light reaching the sensor chip. Although the actual size of the opening may differ considerably. The example shows the difference between a compact digital and a DSLR lenses of equivalent focal length and the same f/8 f/stop.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Art 115: DOF – Illusion of sharpness F /stop: DOF DOF is dependant on the actual size of the opening rather than the specific f/stop. F/8 on the compact digital Acts more like f/16 on a DSLR. Another words, in order for a DSLR to achieve the same DOF as the compact digital, it would have to use f/16 or even f/22. The compact digital may not have the aperture range of the DSLR but the natural deep DOF makes up for a lot of the missing f/stop range..

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Art 115: DOF – Illusion of sharpness F ocal Length & DOF: If deep DOF is your main concern, use the wide angle. The compact digital set to wide (28mm equiv.) using f/2.8 can easily hold a DOF from 4’ to infinity on an 8x10 print held at a 12“ viewing distance. Usually the wide is used for scenic shots because of its natural deep DOF and the wide angle-of-view.

Teacher: Kenji Tachibana Digital Photography I Art 115: DOF – Illusion of sharpness F ocal Length & DOF: If shallow DOF is your main concern, use the telephoto. The compact digital set to telephoto (105 mm equiv.) at f/4 (wide open) produces very shallow DOF. Usually the telephoto is used for portraits because of its natural tendency for shallow DOF. It creates a beautiful selective focus result shown to the right.

Bull’s eye requirements are yours to set. Although please do your best to keep the standards high. Every time you accept a lack luster image as being good, you will be building bad habits.
