Definitions can vary widely Why we do it How we do it Who does it What is Community Transport? Key characteristics

Definition 1 Democratic Locally based Users make decisions Not-for-profit Voluntary-managed Community-based

Definition 2 Choice and flexibility and able to respond to passengers needs Available for use by a wide range of people not just disabled or elderly Used where conventional public transport systems are not generally viable or appropriate Meets needs that conventional public transport does not

Definition 3 Could be bus service controlled by local people to taxi sharing schemes and semi-formalised lift giving. Increases service efficiency and return on investment by funders. Less formal public transport provision. Works in partnership and cooperation with other agencies Leverages transport capacity from variety of agencies and programs

Ways of Defining Community Transport Based on knowledge, experience, wishes or requirements No idea Some Knowledge Imperfect Knowledge Different individuals – different Experiences – different frames Some may not know they have experienced it For some it is an aspiration or an ideal Some will see it within confines of funding program or legislation
