Barriers Definition They are anything that hinders the process of communication They can be defined as the aspects or conditions that interfere with effective exchange of ideas or thoughts.

1. PHYSICAL BARRIERS
a. Faulty Organizational Structure Large working area (unsuitable size) Closed office doors Separate areas for people of different status It forbids team member from effective interaction with each other.

b. Noise Physical noise (outside disturbance) Psychological noise (absent-mindedness) Written noise (bad handwriting/typing)
Physical Noise Physical noise occurs when the sender and receiver try to communicate in a situation that is noisy.
Psychological Noise Psychological noise occurs when the receiver of the message is thinking of something and not concentrating on the message itself
Technical Noise Technical noise occurs when the sender and the receiver use a tool to communicate for example, a phone. Network Facilities
When 2 people are communicating using the phone, and one person steps into an elevator, the signal will be lost and the communication will fail. The breakdown with the tool used to communicate is known as ‘technical noise’.
c. Time Improper Time/poor timing Usually happens when the sender is not aware of the mood of the receiver when sending the message.
d. Information Overload Loading of tasks due to improper time management. Excess number of people assigned for same task Work overload/Information duplication.

PSYCHOLOGICAL BARRIERS FEAR ANGER PERCEPTION LACK OF EMPATHY INSECURITY ANXIETY , STRESS & DEPRESSION Also known as emotional barriers. Psychological barriers can be explained as the reason for distorted communication because of human psychology problems. They include tension, bad temper and frustration or anger directed towards a condition or a person responsible, or sometimes even towards themselves.
