After three centuries of Spanish rule, with French and Haitian interludes, the country became independent in 1821 under the rule of a former colonial judge who maintained the system of slavery and limited rights for the mostly mulatto and black population. The ruler, Jose Nunez de Caceres, intended that the Dominican Republic be part of the nation of Gran Colombia but he was quickly removed by the Haitian government and "Dominican" slave revolts. The civil war of 1965, the country's last, was ended by U.S. led intervention, and was followed by the authoritarian rule of Joaquin Balagues, 1966–1978. The Christianization of the New World that began in the cradle of America, Dominican Republic, sowed the seeds of Catholicism that has paid off for ever and ever. In the twenty-first century, 64% of the Dominican population said that professes the Catholic religion. The Dominican constitution guarantees freedom of religion. All religions are tolerated, but the state religion is Roman Catholic, with 95% of the population being Roman Catholic. For most people religious practice is limited and formalistic. The people respect the advice of their local priest or bishop with regard to religious matters. Sounds like a cult to me! Religious beliefsPlaces of worship

Nepotism is considered a good thing, since it implies employing people one knows and trusts, which is of primary importance.. The oldest male in the extended family makes decisions affecting the balance of the family.
