Furniture Fun Place a favorite chaise or ottoman in a well lit area, and curl up with your favorite afghan and a good book. Set out a table in the hall as a place for mail; a stand for umbrellas; a bench for putting on shoes. Create a den by placing a bookshelf full of reading fun; add a table with chairs. Re-cover a worn out chair or sofa with an interesting finish or fabric rather than discarding it. Dress up your dining room chairs with pretty seat cushions.
If Walls Could Talk Hang some artwork or photographs in a new arrangement. Bring in an artist to do a drawing or painting directly on your wall. Put up a big bulletin board in the kitchen for messages and to tack up mementos. Display a rouge’s gallery of family pictures in a long hallway. Paint the walls in one room a favorite color you have never used before – paint the ceiling and shelves too!
Accessorize, Accessorize! Order unique stationary with your name and address already printed on it. Treat yourself to fresh flowers for your front hall or favorite table at least once a month. Place a phone, pretty note pad, a jar with pencils and pens, and a few books in a room you normally treat as a “company” room to encourage you to use it more. Buy scented soaps, potpourri, and nice hand towels for a powder room. Host a dinner party once a month and use your best china, silverware, and crystal.
The Great Outdoors Buy a new doormat/welcome mat with a great design. Plant the wonderful garden you have always wanted, and include trees you can watch grow through the passing years. Put up wind chimes for pleasant sights and sounds. Build a birdhouse or buy a birdbath for your yard. Plant a vegetable garden, and use what you have grown in your favorite soups and salads.
Happy Homemaking!
